It’s the beginning of Women’s History Month! But did you know that Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California?

The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. After that, women started working together to get more recognition. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th, 1980 as National Women’s History Week. It wasn’t until 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as “Women’s History Month.” However, since 1995, each president has issued annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.”

But we can all agree that women deserve more than one month after contributing so much to the positive changes in the world.

Even though women are usually more prepared at work than their male counterparts, they are often paid less.

Here’s the reality:

  • In 2022, women earned 17% less than men on average.
  • Women earn just 82 cents for every dollar a man makes.
  • Women of color are among the lowest-paid workers in rural areas.
  • Latinas were compensated just 54% of what non-Hispanic white men were paid in 2021.
  • Black women were paid 58% of what non-Hispanic white men were paid in 2020.
  • Native American women are typically paid only 60 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men.

To combat the wage gap, it is important you know how to negotiate your salary.

  • Take a negotiating class.
  • Have conversations with your friends about salary.
  • Never take the first offer.
  • Have a list of the things you are willing to negotiate for.

A lot of people want to use this month as a chance to celebrate all women, but it is more than a celebration. This is a month where we can bring awareness to issues affecting women, such as their safety, equality, and more.

The number of women in media and TV broadcast is increasing.

In 2021-22 the Center for the Study of Women in Television & Film reported that programs on streaming services featured a slightly higher percentage of women characters in speaking roles (47%) than programs on broadcast networks (45%). The report also stated that women represented 50% of major characters on streaming programs versus 48% on broadcast network programs.

But there are some roadblocks that continue to hold women back.

According to Statista, 42% of producers in “behind-the-scenes jobs” on broadcast network programs were women in the 2021-22 season. Aside from that, 47% of major characters in broadcast TV programming were women. However, it is evident that more men than women are employed in this field.

This is why it’s important to show support to women in the media as well as demand more representation whenever possible.

So, here are some of our favorite women making waves in media:

  • Olga Villaverde
  • Karent Sierra
  • Quinta Brunson
  • Jamie Lee Curtis
  • Oprah Winfrey
  • Rachael Ray
