The search for the new Karate Kid is underway!

This past week, Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan announced that they will be starring together in a new upcoming Karate Kid movie and looking for a new “Karate Kid.” Macchio played the iconic teen protagonist Daniel LaRusso in the 1984 classic. Chan played Mr. Han in the Karate Kid reboot released in 2010 starring Jaden Smith.

“Hi everyone! We’ve got big news,” Chan exclaimed at the beginning of the video, before Macchio stated, “We’re starring in a new Karate Kid movie together.”

Chan continued to share the exciting news, “We’re looking for the next Karate Kid.”

“That’s right. The global search for the star of our new film starts right now,” Macchio said.

Karate Kid Casting Details

You heard that right! There is a live public casting call to be the new Karate Kid. The casting director is looking for a 15 to 17-year-old to play Li Fong. The actor needs to portray a Chinese or mixed-race Chinese. He must speak fluent English and conversational Mandarin is a plus. Any sort of martial arts, gymnastics, movement, and/or dance experience is a plus.

Sony Pictures will produce the movie. The spin-off series Cobra Kai is distributed by Sony Pictures Television.

Karate Kid Spin-Off  ‘Cobra Kai’

Macchio has kept his character alive in recent years with the Netflix Original series “Cobra Kai.” Notable characters from the original Karate Kid franchise have made appearances including William Zabka who played Johnny Lawerence, Martin Kove who played the villain John Kreese, and others. The final season of the show is set to release in late 2024.

With the success of Cobra Kai, it only feels natural that creators are pushing for more. In fact, in 2022, fans watched Cobra Kai for a combined 16 billion minutes. The show was the fourth most-watched original streaming series on Netflix released in 2022. Only Wednesday (18.6 billion minutes), Ozark (31.6 billion minutes), and Stranger Things (52 billion minutes) were ahead.
