First of all, if you took time off to raise your children, good for you! As you are fully aware – it’s a full-time job in and of itself! So how do you transition back into the workplace? Here are a list of questions and tips for moms re-entering the workforce, compiled by the writers of The Balancing Act TV Show you may be facing and our recommendations:

How should I account for a gap on my resume? While this is usually a red flag, we recommend a simple explanation in this format, “Raising children: 2004-2009”.

Is it appropriate to ask for part-time hours if the employer is looking for a full-time hire? Most companies seeking full-time employees will not consider part time, so either look for a part-time position or wait until you believe you truly have a shot to have the conversation.

What type of references will be expected? Smaller companies may be satisfied with personal references that you supply, however most companies will verify your date of employment, salary and reason for leaving with your previous employers.

How do I make my resume more effective? We could write you a novel full of recommendations, but in general, make sure it isn’t too wordy; emphasize longevity and upward mobility, such as promotions; and try to eliminate unexplained gaps.

What can I do to improve my interview? Speak confidently, be animated and answer the questions with examples so the hiring manager is clear about what you’re trying to communicate. Make sure you are well prepared with knowledge of the company, reiterate how interested you are in the position and remember to thank anyone involved afterwards. To make it more personal and memorable, try writing a short note instead of sending an email.

The big, bad world may feel intimidating after your absence, but just remember – if you can give birth, you can do anything!
