Every year that passes by people notice more and more fine lines and imperfections on their skin. Whether those come from the sun or the natural aging process, aging comes naturally and there is no way to stop but, but there are ways to protect your skin and keep it looking young and healthy. Anti-aging products help to diminish the aging effects on your skin and can help reduce fine lines. With so many products on the market, it is easy to get confused when searching for a good one. The key to choosing a good product is knowing what ingredients to stay away from and which ones to look for, so let’s dive right into it.

Firstly, we will show you what ingredients to stay away from to protect your skin. Although we would love to believe that the ingredients used in our skincare products are all good and beneficial, companies tend to add substances that can cause a lot more harm than benefits. Some of these ingredients are so common and so widely used, that they could be damaging your skin in the long term without you even knowing it. One of these ingredients is alcohol. If you looked through the ingredient list in the products in your bathroom right now, you would see that almost all of them utilize alcohol (unless you are super ingredient-conscious). Alcohols like ethanol, methanol, benzyl, isopropyl, and ethyl are extremely stripping to the skin. This means that they take away your natural oils and make your skin very dry, which accelerates aging and irritation.

Another widely used ingredient is sulfate. Sulfate is extremely harsh on the skin and is commonly found in products like degreasers, car soap, and scrubbing solutions. Sulfates cause irritation, dryness and can slowly break down the skin, which causes premature aging. Surprisingly enough, mineral oils are also an ingredient to be avoided in skincare as they clog pores, leading your skin to inflame and further leading to premature aging.

Now that you know some of the most harmful ingredients, let’s get into what you should look for in your products. Ingredients that help prevent aging are vitamins, specifically vitamin A and C. Tretinoin is a vitamin A derivative, which are also referred to as retinoids. This is an amazing ingredient to increase cell turnover, which helps reduce fine lines, scars and reduce sun damage. Another vitamin that is extremely beneficial for the skin is vitamin C. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, has many benefits for your body, but it can also help the skin due to its antioxidant aspect, eliminating damaging free radicals from the skin caused by sun exposure. It also helps to even out skin tones and gets rid of hyper-pigmented spots on the skin, leaving it uniform and glowing.

Another magical ingredient is niacinamide, which has been gaining popularity. This helps your skin by supporting the skin barrier and making it more resilient to outside factors. Furthermore, lactic acid, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid all help the skin by increasing cell turnover, diminishing pores, and decreasing pigmentation. All these ingredients work together and accomplish different tasks on your skin. Combined with other products and ingredients, these are key substances to help your skin look healthy and ageless.

Now that you know exactly what to look for in anti-aging products and what to stay away from, there is no excuse not to use them! So, if you are getting to the age where you might need to start boosting up your skincare routine, run to the store, find your products, and remember to check the ingredient list!
