The Balancing Act goes behind the scenes with The King and I
January 16, 2017
East meets West musical extravaganza
What happens when a British school teacher travels Siam to serve as governess to the king’s many children? Well…East vs. West! It’s dramatic, richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale set in 1862 as widow Anna Leonowens and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. Both keep a firm grip on their respective traditions and values but eventually Anna and the King grow to understand and respect one another in this truly unique love story. The Balancing Act’s Amber Milt sits down with director Bartlett Sher as he talks about his Tony Award winning revival of this classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. We also met Laura Michelle Kelly who plays Anna… and Joan Almedilla who plays Lady Thiang as they discuss the balance of what is… versus what could be. Plus we meet the king himself, Jose Llana.
