Home For The Holidays: Sweet Endings

Swiss Maid Fudge first opened forty years ago in downtown Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. Over the years the candy store has expanded to include salt water taffy, caramel apples, caramel corn, brittles, crunches and the list goes on. All of the candy is made the old European way using copper kettles and cooked over open gas fired cast iron stoves. Small batches ensure freshness and quality. Locals can peek into the action by taking a tour of the old fashioned store. Photos from the tour are also posted online.

Among dozens of options, long standing favorite continues to be Milk Chocolate Fudge. Other popular treats are Cashew Crunch loaded with fresh roasted cashews, Assorted Caramel Apples, and buttery smooth Vanilla Caramels. Seasonal items include Spiced Pumpkin Seed Brittle, Pumpkin Fudge, Cranberry Fudge, and Peppermint Bark. Sugar-free candy options include Chocolate Nut Fudge, Peanut Butter Cups and Salt Water Taffy.

Creating Recipes For Family Traditions

Bridgford frozen dough makes holiday baking easy, from traditional rolls, to monkey breads, cinnamon rolls to party pizzas. Fill your home with warm, delicious aromas this season that will bring the whole family to the table.

Pepperoni Monkey Bread

1 package Bridgford Parkerhouse Rolls or 1.5 loaves BFBD divided into 48 equal pieces
2 oz sliced Bridgford Pepperoni (about 28 thin slices)
1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tsp dried oregano
½ tsp. garlic powder
½ cup butter, melted

Let dough thaw. If using Bridgford Roll Dough, divide each roll piece in half; set aside. Lightly grease a 12 cup bundt cake pan; set aside. In a medium size bowl, combine Parmesan, oregano, and garlic. With kitchen shears, cut the pepperoni slices into smaller pieces and mix into cheese mixture; set aside. Dip each dough piece in butter and then coat in pepperoni/cheese mixture. Place coated balls of dough evenly in pan. Let the dough rise until double in size. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 35 - 40 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on top. Remove from oven and invert out of pan upside down on a large plate. Serve with marinara sauce if desired.

Bridgford Cinnamon Rolls

1 loaf Bridgford Frozen Bread Dough, thawed
¼ cup melted butter or margarine
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ cup raisins (optional)
¼ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Lightly grease a 12 cavity muffin pan or two 8 inch pie or cake pans. Set aside. Roll thawed loaf on a lightly floured surface to an 8 x 12 inch rectangle. Brush dough with half of the butter. Mix cinnamon with sugar and spread over butter. Roll dough up starting from the 12-inch side. Seal seams. Divide log of cinnamon dough into 12 equal size pieces. Place one piece into each muffin tin or divide and place 6 in each prepared pie or cake pan. Brush dough with melted butter. Let rise until double in size. Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 20 minutes or until a light golden brown. Remove from oven and brush with additional butter. If desired drizzle with vanilla icing
Icing: mix 2 cups powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons milk or water and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract. Add more milk or water for thinner consistency.
Yield 12 rolls

Preparing Your Family for Natural Disasters

September is National Preparedness Month...
ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY READY FOR THE NEXT DISASTER?

The American Red Cross is launching a new public awareness campaign designed to make it easier for Americans to prepare for emergencies. The campaign - Do More Than Cross Your Fingers - features actress and Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet Member Jamie Lee Curtis.

The Do More Than Cross Your Fingers campaign will track and measure people’s preparedness levels, encouraging Americans to take simple actions like building an emergency kit, creating a communication and evacuation plan and being informed about disasters common in their communities.

Jamie Lee Curtis, a long-time supporter of the Red Cross and a vocal advocate for personal preparedness in her home state of California talks to us live. She will encourage and show mothers how to prepare their loved ones and households for the unexpected. According to Curtis, “We all cross our fingers for luck. But when we’re facing life’s emergencies, it’s easy (and important) to do a little more.”

What you will see & learn:
 How to assemble a household emergency supply kit;
 How to write an emergency plan and what to do with it;
 What the Red Cross is doing in your area to prepare for disaster and emergency relief, plus more!
